Rise Above Plastics - update 1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ICE SCULPTURE INSTALLATIONS ENCOURAGE THE COMMUNITY OF PROVIDENCE TO RISE ABOVE PLASTICS.

PROVIDENCE, RI (February 17, 2010) —As Providence is currently stepping up its sustainability efforts, the Surfrider Foundation Rhode Island Chapter is bringing their national Rise Above Plastics campaign to the city, in the form of ice sculptures. These sculptures will depict various native species of shore birds and frozen within the sculptures will be an assortment of plastics. The plastics that were used in these sculptures were collected from local beaches. The Ice sculptures will be on display starting Monday, February 22nd throughout Providence in outdoor areas such as Grants Block on the corner of Union and Westminster St.

The sculptures, crafted by Art In Ice, will be part of an integrated campaign, aimed to draw attention to our society's addiction to single use plastics and the negative effect they have on our earth’s environment as a whole, as well as our local community. In more literal form these ice sculptures will represent the direct effect mindless use of plastics has on wildlife. One million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die globally each year due to ingestion of or entanglement in plastics. As the sculptures melt the plastics will be revealed and eventually will be all that remains. Sadly these sculptures are far from just a metaphor. Plastic is forever, with virtually every piece of petroleum based plastic ever made still in existence. That's why it's so critical to our oceans and beaches that we dramatically reduce our use of plastics, especially single-use plastics.

The Rise Above Plastics campaign will strive to raise awareness for these issues surrounding plastics as well as change bad habits by encouraging the community to embrace reusable items. “You don’t need to live near a beach to keep our state clean. The plastics that we use in our every day lives, easily find their way to the ocean and impact local wildlife. As The Ocean State, we have a chance to make a real difference,” adds Chapter Chair, David Prescott.

There will be a chance to interact with the Rise Above Plastics campaign and win eco-friendly prizes using twitter. Those who “twitpic” one of the ice sculptures to the Rhode Island Chapter's twitter account, SurfriderRI, will be qualified to win.

Mavericks

I told you the waters were churning and something big was about to happen.
Apparently that was less of a metaphorical pondering than I thought.

Big watery and churning! Mavericks is going off!

Happy 2010 Mavericks Surf Contest day!

I can't imagine how much fun and freaky-ness that those guys are experiencing out there.

Speaking of surfing, college has felt like one big paddle out... now with less than 100 days before graduation I feel like I am finally making it past the break, it literally feels exactly like knowing that you've only got one more set to get past and then its all about getting at those waves. And that has to be the best feeling ever.

breakfast on tap

I cannot believe last night was the first time I had Leinenkugel. How did I not know about this beer before? It tastes amazing if you are in the mood for something different in case you haven't tried it, you have to. Before I ordered it I was told it tastes like fruity pebbles and that was no cute comparison. Dead on!

Brink

Within the past 24 hours those around me with a keen sense for things have made a point to get in touch with me over the same intuitive observation: Something big is about to happen. Waters are churning and something is gearing up to happen that will change things for the good hopefully. I commented to my best friend last night that I've never felt the air being so charged with possibility to a point of being almost overwhelmed. Ever since I've had quite a few conversations that match up.

Happy Birthday, best friend.

Just have to take a moment and say happy 21 to my best friend since middle school, Marie-Louise, who recently jumped off the deep end head first into the local fashion scene. She has a style-blog that she updates daily and a clothing line called "Marie-Louise" that she is quickly gaining notoriety for.

If you get the chance, visit Queen of Hearts in downtown Providence, to try on her stuff.

Here is a video clip of her most recent collection featured in a local fashion show at Firehouse 13.

Groundhog Day

Imagine being able to wake up, walk outside and then decide to go back to bed because you just weren't feelin it, with no regard for the fact that doing so would piss off hundreds of millions of people for an entire day. Sometimes I wish I could just slip into a state of apathy and waste an entire day away in my bed.

Surfrider

This year I have been doing some ad work for the Surfrider Foundation, which I have also subsequently become a member of. If you have an affinity for the sea in any way shape or form (you don't have to be a surfer) it is a worthwhile organization to look into. There are chapters in most of the states across the country and many worldwide. We are about to kick off of our Rise Above Plastics campaign downtown Providence later this month. Once that starts I will be posting daily updates, there will be ice-sculptures involved, but not ordinary ice-sculptures....

Anyways, in the meantime here are some old favorites and the more recent, brilliant work from Saatchi & Saatchi that I just had to share.
